How important is goal setting, what’s the purpose and can it make a difference?

Goals are a great starting point! They help to provide motivation and direction to allow you to see where you are wanting to head and keep you on track throughout your journey. But can they also have a negative impact if not done correctly?

Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely. If you are missing any of these 5 parts you may be setting yourself up to fail before you’ve even started. “I want to lose 20kg in 5 weeks”. Is it really achievable and safe to lose this amount of weight in such a short period? Can it be done, of course it can under a very controlled situation, however are the lessons being learnt on how to keep this weight off for the long term?

Does 5 weeks allow you to learn enough about nutrition, calorie intake and run the bad habits out of town that first originally got you into this position in the first place? Fast forward to the end of 5 weeks when the scales don’t reflect a 20kg loss the negative cycle recommences, motivation decreases and the bad food creeps back into your daily lifestyle once again. The good habits over the 5 weeks are now being undone and bad habits are starting to re-appear.

Smart goals are the way to go! :
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Timely

These 5 things will allow you to make sure you set yourself real, actual goals that are attainable and achievable which will teach you great new daily habits that will reflect in your everyday life. Better skin, Better hair, Better lifestyle, and hopefully with some smaller clothes to add to your wardrobe!

But indeed goals need to be set otherwise you don’t know where you are heading, it’s basically like trying to drive your car of a night with no headlights. Use the SMART method and see how much it will change your way of setting your next round of goals.

Now focus and put it into action! Happy goal setting! Let us know what goals you’ve set yourself. We love to hear about your personal journey!
